I Went on a Digital Detox
Over the Easter long weekend, I decided to take a digital detox and switched off social media.
Okay, so it wasn’t a complete detox, where I switched off my phone and hid from the world for the long weekend. That would have been impossible when I had multiple plans organised with friends and family.
However, I did switch off my computer for three days and stayed off social media as much as I could. It was refreshing and I’ve never felt better.
In-fact, if it wasn’t for a few clients I work with, where I manage their Instagram and Facebook accounts, I would have seriously considered taking a full week break from social media altogether. But you know what? Three days was good enough.
If you’re unsure what a digital detox is, the concept is where you take a break from technology (as much of it as possible), especially social media and ditch the addiction of always being on the phone.
Whether you are watching YouTube all the time, playing games, using Snap Chat, or following WAY too many people on Facebook and Instagram and obsessing over what they are doing daily, the idea of taking a break and not caring what anyone was doing was such a refreshing change, to always being online, posting, commenting and engaging.
I absolutely loved how good it felt to leave the phone behind and not be so heavily focused on what was happening in the world on social media. So much so, when I was with family and friends and didn’t need it, it either stayed in my back on silent, or in my room on charge and on silent.
And as for social media, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I didn’t miss it. Not one bit.
Will I do another detox again, absolutely. Though next time I will try and make it longer, like maybe for five days instead of the three I did this time around.
I have a few clients where I manage their social media, their contracts will be up soon. As soon as they are all finished, I won’t be renewing. Or, if I do renew their business contracts, then I will take a week respite from it to see how good it feels.
Have you ever done a digital detox? I’d love to hear how you went.
