Finding Peace at The Chalice Well

Hidden on an awkward street corner of Glastonbury, is a mysterious location, called The Chalice Well.

Surrounded with mystery and many legends, the gardens here are peaceful and enjoyable, with pure spring water available to drink. Which is both refreshing and completely chemical free.

In Britain, The Chalice Well is among the best known and most loved holy wells around. Many of the legends associated with the well, are attributed to the chalybate waters, which flow ceaselessy at a steady rate and temperature which never varies.

And, Archaeological evidence even suggests, that the well has been in almost constant use for at least two thousand years. They know this, because they found several dozen flints from the upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic, and a sherd of Iron Age pottery nearby. Roman and medieval sherds were also found in more recent layers.

But, there are also many types of religious and spiritual stories associated with The Chalice Well. Many spiritual people acknowledge the water as the being the essence of life itself, a gift from Mother Earth, here to sustain all livings things.

Where the Christians believe the blood of Christ himself, miraculously sprung forth from the well, when Joseph of Arimathea buried or washed the cup used at the Last Supper.

I am not a religious person, at all. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s certainly a personal choice, and not one of mine. However, that doesn’t mean, I don’t like the idea of all the mysterious stories associated with many religions around the world.

In particular, the old religions of the Celts and the Druids. Which I find both fascinating and dreamy. Probably because of my Celtic heritage. And the Chalice Well is one such place.

There have been many strange stories about The Chalice Well in Glastonbury. With some locals even stating at night, they can often hear, what sounds like a beating heart echoing through the well. Weird!

Even if you don’t believe in any of this hocus pocus, as some may call it – The Chalice Well is still well worth the visit. As the gardens alone; and of course drinking the pure spring water, is an awesome experience.
